One of the Best Themes Ever /// Music Monday #12

Yes, it is once again Music Monday, and the track I have for you is an epic one. So hold on to your hats--if you're wearing one, that is--because your mind is about to be blown . . . again! Because you've probably heard this song before. And if your mind is going to be blown, you may want to hold on to your head instead. Ah, forget this noise!

Cringey intro aside, the song for today is . . .

"The Avengers" from The Avengers
Composed by Alan Silvestri

In case you haven't been on the internet lately, the trailer for Infinity War dropped on November 29th, hitting #1 on YouTube's trending page . . .  and it's currently sitting at #5, which is unheard of, as far as I'm concerned. I'm pretty this trailer is the most viewed one to date, with over 82 million views.

Just because I can, I'm going to add the trailer here, because if you haven't seen it, you need to. Like, RIGHT now. And if you have watched it already, watch it again. I saw it five times the day it was released.

Man, I've never been prouder to be a Marvel fanboy. You may have noticed that Infinity War is going to be released on May 4th of next year. That's precisely six years since The Avengers came out. To me, it feels like just yesterday (not quite, but close enough) that I couldn't stop raving about how good the first movie was.

But you know what's even cooler? Iron Man, the film that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, was released on May 2nd, 2008. Which means that Infinity War is coming out two days more than ten years since the beginning of the MCU. Isn't that crazy? How does a decade of films seem so short?

One of the things the trailer does best is reuse Silvestri's theme for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I remember listening the soundtrack way back when and thinking it was kinda lackluster. If I listened to it now, my opinion would most likely be different. But the Avengers' theme has got to be one of the best, most memorable themes--right up there with classics like the Star Wars or Indiana Jones themes.

Contrary to popular opinion, I've found Marvel to have consistently made great scores. A lot of people would disagree and say they aren't memorable, to which I reply, "You wouldn't know a good song if it walked up to ya and slapped ya square in the face! You're probably one of those folks who thinks that mainstream pop is swell, yeah? Well, it ISN'T. It SUCKS. So don't ya dare insult my Marvel music ever again, because your taste is more than just severely lacking--IT'S NONEXISTENT!"

. . .  I may have just offended a lot of people right there, so let's keep moving.

The Avengers' theme is used brilliantly in the trailer, at all the right moments. I know Silvestri is going be utilizing it in Infinity War (and maybe if someone dies, we'll get a sad version of it!). What I hope he also does is create continuity by reusing other themes from the MCU, such as the themes for Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, et cetera. I'm also really anticipating hearing Thanos's theme. The closest thing we got was one track from the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, and it had some nice deep brass in it. Maybe his new theme will have some of that too.

Anyway, I've been rambling. This post has been all over the map, and I've been talking more about Infinity War than I have the song. But that's okay! I'm still getting my mind wrapped around the epicness. Just enjoy the music and look forward to the new movie even more.

What's your opinion on the Avengers' theme, or even Marvel music in general? Have you seen the Infinity War trailer yet? Are you hyped? Do you think Silvestri will succeed at creating a great score for the movie? Or are you just not interested in Marvel/superhero movies at all? Share your excitement, or lack thereof, in the comments!

  1. Wow. That is some intensely awesome superhero music right there. I can't believe I've never listened to any of this before! My life has been missing a very important piece, apparently. I'll have to listen to some more Marvel music. Which soundtracks are the best, in your opinion? (And does DC have any good music, or should I not even ask that question.)

And that trailer was seriously awesome. So many teaser shots that don't actually give you much information . . . ugh. Looks like it'll be great, though!

Also, I TOTALLY agree with you about mainstream pop music! Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about - and doesn't hesitate to tell the hard truth. :D

    1. I know, right? It's an epic piece of music. :D Well, not everyone notices music while watching movies. I really love all three Captain America soundtracks, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Avengers: Age of Ultron . . . the list goes on. XD

DC actually aces in the musical side of things. I love soundtracks because of the music from The Dark Knight Rises. I highly recommend the music from the Dark Knight trilogy (although I haven't listened to Batman Begins much), Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (the deluxe edition), and the music from their TV shows, like Arrow and The Flash.

It looks extremely awesome! I can't wait to see everyone in action, taking on Thanos. The character interaction is going to be great. :D

Well, that makes one person. XD I thought I might've been too harsh, as it was kind of a blanket statement, but I'm glad you agreed with the sentiment. :)

    2. I love superhero scores, because their themes are so intense and heroic-sounding. I'll have to check those out!

Ooh, I can imagine the Batman music being pretty awesome - except the theme song from the old TV show. That one's . . . interesting. :D I'm not surprised you like the music from The Flash. XD

I love movies with character interaction! The way their personalities fit together - or don't - is so much fun to see. What characters are you most looking forward to seeing in action?

Yes, I hold unpopular opinions. XD No, you were completely right. There may be the occasional rare exception (emphasis on rare) but most pop music is for profit only. I like my music layered, harmonized, and beautiful, thank you very much. :D

    3. Same! I would've tried to do a smaller list, but limiting it even more would've been far too hard. XD

I have not seen the old show or heard any of its music, so I should look into it sometime for fun. :P Blake Neely is amazing composer. I can't not like his score for The Flash. XD

I'm looking forward to seeing Cap, Spider-Man, the Winter Soldier, Star-Lord, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange . . . I have to stop now while I'm at a decent length. XD What about you?

*starts clapping* Amen! Preach it, sister. XD

    4. I know, when you love something, it's hard to stop. But superhero music is great for study - inspiring without being distracting. Two Steps From Hell always strikes me as somewhat similar, kind of superhero/fantasy/epic genre.

The theme song is awful. It's funny, though. :D Also, it's made fun of in other movies, so it's not bad as an inside joke.

XD Wow! You must not be looking forward to it at all . . . right? Definitely Doctor Strange for me (Benedict Cumberbatch is one of my favorite actors,) Spider-Man, and one other I can't remember. :D

*steps off soapbox* Why thank you! It's nice to find someone else who shares my view, though. Even my enlightened musical friends have their secret vices. XD Are there any pop songs you tolerate?

    5. Indeed it is. I think a lot of soundtracks are good for studying, but it probably depends on the individual. *thinks about that* Yeah, I suppose that's one way to describe it. :)

Oh, wait, I think I know which one you're talking about now! XD

No, definitely not. XD Good choices!

You're welcome! I can't think of any at the moment . . . there aren't a whole lot. :P Whenever an ad for a pop music station on Spotify comes up, I'm just like, "Shut up and let me listen to real music in peace." XD

  2. YES YES YES YES YESSSS!!! The Avengers theme just gets the heart pumping! It's the epitome of epic!

AND OH MAH WORD THE INFINITY WARS TRAILER. As my brother said after we first watched it, "My goosebumps have goosebumps." IT LOOKS SO AMAZING!

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that these movies have been going for TEN YEARS. I very vividly remember when the first Iron Man was brand new. o.O It's just so wild!

I'm so so so soooo pumped for Infinity Wars. Also terrified for all the beloved characters. BUT STILL PUMPED!

    1. I know, right? I can't wait to hear it used with the superhero group being so large. :D

Your bro's quote is a very accurate one. XD I have to see Infinity War in theaters. Not doing so would be a betrayal to the Marvel fan in me.

It's pretty crazy. What Marvel movie was your first favorite?

Yeah, I have a feeling several characters are gonna die, and I have a few guesses. IT'S GONNA BE AWESMAZING! ^_^
